Pastor Vivian joined us in July 2018. She and her husband, John (who is pastor of Salmon Creek UMC) moved here from Colorado to be closer to their grandchild. Vivian earned her Bachelor of Music degree at Peninsula School of Music in the San Francisco Bay area. She performed leading roles in opera and operettas around the Bay Area. She and John (who was a computer programmer at the time) raised their boys (Jonathan and Jeffrey) in the Pacific Northwest and Colorado. The whole family was active in community theatre and their local church.
Vivian became a spiritual director, earning a Graduate Certificate in Christian Spiritual Formation from the prestigious Shalem Institute. In the early 2000s she led retreats and taught classes and workshops in prayer, the labyrinth, the enneagram, and other spiritual topics throughout the Pacific Northwest. She also had a number of people who came to her for individual spiritual direction.
In 2008, Vivian and John both discerned a call to ministry, and moved from Forest Grove, Oregon, to Denver Colorado to attend Iliff School of Theology. Vivian worked as a pastor and as a hospital chaplain while she attended school, and graduated with a Master of Divinity degree (with highest honors) in 2011.
While serving as a pastor, Vivian realized that many churches were struggling with the changes in our society. She became certified as a Transitional Intentional Interim Ministry Specialist and after ordination was appointed to several churches for 1 or 2 years to help them solve problems and set a new direction for themselves.
Vivian is using her education, training, and experience as our "settled" pastor, since she intends to stay close to her grandchild! She and John recently bought a home in Washougal and are busy unpacking and planning where to put the swing set. Vivian enjoys playing with their dogs, reading, and walking local trails (because hiking is too much work!).
